Despite the disruption in Russia caused by the Wagner Group rebellion, there were only minor changes to the Russian–Ukrainian front over the course of 2023, although elsewhere, near the periphery of Europe, a major war broke out between Israel and Hamas. However, early the next year, the Russians managed to score a significant victory over Ukraine when they captured the strategic city of Avdiivka after a four-month battle.

19–20 Sep 2023 Azerbaijani suppression of Nagorno-Karabakh ▲

On 19 September 2023 Azerbaijan launched a full-scale military offensive against the ethnically Armenian breakaway Republic of Artsakh in Nagorno-Karabakh, violating a ceasefire made in 2020. The following day the Russian peacekeeping contingent mediated a new ceasefire agreement, in which Artsakh agreed to surrender and to disarm its armed forces, resulting in the republic’s dissolution by 1 January 2024. In the wake of this defeat, over 100,000 ethnic Armenians—almost the entire Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh—fled Azerbaijan in what has been described by the International Criminal Court as a second Armenian genocide. in wikipedia

In response to Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack, Israel blockaded, bombarded and then, on the 27th, invaded the Gaza Strip, with the expressed intention of destroying Hamas and demilitarizing Gaza. By January 2025, when a ceasefire was arranged, over 46,000 Palestinians had been reported killed in the invasion, with the accompanying destruction of infrastructure leading to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. 10 Oct 2023–17 Feb 2024 Battle of Avdiivka ▲

In October 2023 Russian forces launched an offensive to capture the heavily fortified Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, strategically situated outside Donetsk and home to the largest coke producing plant in Ukraine. After a battle lasting four months and one week, the Russians managed to all but encircle the settlement, compelling the remaining Ukrainian troops to evacuate for fear of capture in February 2024. This Russian victory—the most significant since Bakhmut (May 2023)—opened up western Donetsk to Russian expansion, but cost Russia an estimated 17,000 dead and 30,000 injured for an unknown number of Ukrainian casualties. in wikipedia
