In early November 270 the Roman admiral Tenagino Probus, who had been campaigning against Gothic sea pirates, returned to Alexandria and swiftly ejected the Palmyrene garrison. His reconquest of Egypt was, however, short-lived and he was soon after forced to commit suicide when pro-Palmyrene forces captured his base at Babylon Fortress in a surprise attack.
