Political map of Europe & the Mediterranean 12 July 1943 (Kursk and Sicily): By mid-1943, the Axis (Axis Powers) situation was rapidly deteriorating with Germany losing its foothold in North Africa (Tunisian Campaign) and being forced to put its submarine campaign on hold (Black May (1943)) while Allied bombers brought increasing terror to the Fatherland (Strategic bombing during World War II). Hitler's solution was a new offensive in the East, but the Russians were ready for his assault on Kursk (Battle of Kursk) and the Western Allies diverted his attention by invading Sicily (Allied invasion of Sicily).
