Political map of Europe & the Mediterranean 28 August 1849 (Restoring the Old Order): The French capture of Rome (Siege of Rome (1849)) effectively brought an end to the revolution in Italy (Revolutions of 1848 in the Italian states), allowing Austria to reassert its traditional dominance in the north in August. At the same time, Russian intervention helped Austria crush the Hungarian rebellion (Hungarian Revolution of 1848) while Prussia stamped out the last remnants of republicanism in Germany (Hecker Uprising).
