Political map of Europe & the Mediterranean 22 April 1821 (Greek War of Independence): In 1814 a secret organization called the Filiki Eteria was formed to liberate Greece from centuries of Ottoman rule (Ottoman Greece). The revolution began in early 1821, with rebellions in Moldavia and Wallachia (Wallachian uprising of 1821) (which were ruled by Greek princes (Phanariotes)). By March the revolution had spread to Greece itself, where Greek nationalists gained control of most of the country by the end of the year (Greek War of Independence).
