Political map of Europe & the Mediterranean 28 September 1820 (Revolutions of 1820): Following the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the Great Powers attempted to stand together to preserve the stability of the old European order (Concert of Europe) against the growing force of liberalism. Although the British (Peterloo Massacre) and Germans temporarily succeeded in suppressing liberalism in 1819 (Carlsbad Decrees), liberal revolutionaries (Revolutions of 1820)—partially inspired by the independence struggle in Latin America (Latin American wars of independence)—took power in Spain (Trienio Liberal), Portugal (Liberal Revolution of 1820), and the Two Sicilies (Carbonari) in 1820.
