Political map of North America & the Caribbean 21 April 1836 (Texas Revolution): By the 1830s the Mexican border region of Texas (Mexican Texas) had become dominated by settlers from the neighboring US. When, in 1835, Mexican President Santa Anna (Antonio L%C3%B3pez de Santa Anna) revoked the 1824 Constitution (1824 Constitution of Mexico), Texas went into rebellion (Texas Revolution), declaring its independence (Texas Declaration of Independence) the following year. Santa Anna personally led the offensive to crush the rebels, only to be defeated and captured at San Jacinto (Battle of San Jacinto).
