When King Robert Baratheon died, Ned Stark, the Hand of the King and Warden of the North, refused to recognize Prince Joffrey—who Ned had discovered to be a bastard—as the rightful heir. Joffrey assumed the Iron Throne anyway and had Ned executed, leading to a four-way civil war in which Robert’s brothers Stannis and Renly both claimed the throne and Ned’s son Robb led a rebellion in the North. Meanwhile in the Dothraki lands to the east, Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of the “Mad” King Aerys—who Robert had deposed—and widow of the Dothraki Khal Drogo, managed to hatch three dragons.
