Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and, like many of the former Soviet states, soon faced internal divisions over whether to remain close to Russia or form stronger ties with the West. When the pro-Western Euromaidan Revolution overthrew a pro-Russian government in 2014, Russia responded by annexing Crimea and supporting secessionists in Ukraine’s Donbass region. Eight years later, in February 2022, Russia launched an invasion of the rest of Ukraine.
