Main Events

British & French arrive in Mexico

British and French troops disembarked at Veracruz, Mexico.

US takes Forts Henry & Donelson

Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant captured Forts Henry and Donelson, Tennessee, from the Confederacy.

Battle of Hampton Roads

Union and Confederate ships clashed near Hampton Roads, Virginia, including the first fight between ironclads, the CSS Virginia and the USS Monitor. Although the Virginia was more heavily armed, the Monitor's movable turret proved a more efficient weapon.

New Mexico Campaign

Confederate forces captured Santa Fe, capital of the New Mexico Territory.

Peninsula Campaign begins

Hoping to move quickly and capture the Confederate capital at Richmond, 121,000 Union troops under General George B. McClellan landed on the Virginia peninsula.

Battle of Glorieta Pass

Confederate forces pushed Union forces back through Glorieta Pass, New Mexico, but were forced to withdraw due to supply losses.

Battle of Shiloh

The loss of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson led the Confederates to retreat back to Corinth, Mississippi, enabling the Union army under Ulysses S. Grant to capture a large area of eastern Tennessee, but also enabling the Confederates to regroup, attacking Grant at Pittsburg Landing. However, in the ensuing Battle of Shiloh, the much larger Union force prevailed.
