Political map of Sub-Saharan Africa 24 February 1961 (Discord over the Congo): The deposing and later assassination of Congolese PM Lumumba (Patrice Lumumba) divided the United Nations. The Eastern Bloc countries and many of the recently independent states, especially in Africa, continued to support Lumumba and his successor, Gizenga (Antoine Gizenga), as the legitimate leaders of the Congo. This strained the UN Operation in the Congo as African nations considered withdrawing their forces.
