Political map of Russia & the former Soviet Union 3 July 1940 (Nazi-Soviet Honeymoon): In sharp contrast to the lackluster performance of the Soviets in Finland (Winter War), the Germans scored success after success in their offensive against the Allies (Allies of World War II), occupying Western Europe and forcing France to come to terms (Battle of France). Seizing on the Allied collapse and secure in its understanding with Germany (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), the Soviet Union occupied the Baltic states (Occupation of the Baltic states) and demanded territory from Romania (Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina). Without any hope of support, Romania quickly accepted Soviet terms.
