Political map of North America & the Caribbean 20 August 1914 (Occupation of Veracruz): In 1913 General Huerta (Victoriano Huerta) had seized power in Mexico in a bloody coup (La decena tragica), much to the dislike of the US government (although with the unauthorized backing of the US ambassador). When Mexican forces temporarily arrested some US sailors at Tampico (Tampico Affair) a year later, the US disregarded a Mexican apology and retaliated by occupying the major port of Veracruz (United States occupation of Veracruz) until Huerta had been overthrown.
