Political map of Australia, New Zealand & the Southwest Pacific 17 June 1944 (Western New Guinea Campaign): From Pearl Harbor (Attack on Pearl Harbor) on, the Allied priority had been to defeat Germany (Europe First), with minimal forces devoted to the Pacific. However American naval supremacy after Midway (Battle of Midway) and Guadalcanal (Guadalcanal Campaign), along with a successful submarine campaign to cut supplies (Allied submarines in the Pacific War), meant that they could now isolate and bypass most of the Japanese garrisons (Leapfrogging (strategy)), fighting only where they chose to as they moved along the northern coast of New Guinea towards the Philippines (Western New Guinea campaign).
