Political map of Australia, New Zealand & the Southwest Pacific 14 March 1899 (Second Samoan Civil War): In 1899, Samoa broke into its second civil war in a decade (Second Samoan Civil War), when the Germans supported a rebellion against the Anglo-American-backed Samoan king (Malietoa Tanumafili I). With neither side able to prevail, the three powers agreed to the partition of the islands between Germany and the US (Tripartite Convention (1899)). As compensation, Britain was given a free hand in Tonga and made gains in the Solomon Islands.
