Political map of East Asia and the Western Pacific 06 February 1922 (Washington Naval Conference): Growing tensions between the U.S., Britain, and Japan over fleet construction led to the Washington Naval Conference (Washington Naval Conference), the world's first disarmament conference. The participants agreed to limit their fleet sizes (Washington Naval Treaty), maintain the status quo in the Pacific (Four-Power Treaty), and guarantee China's independence (Nine-Power Treaty).
