Political map of the Arctic & the Far North 21 August 1918 (Allied Intervention in Russia): The US entry into the War (United States declaration of war on Germany (1917)) could not save Russia, which was largely cut off from the other Allies and unable to handle the strain of the War. In late 1917, the communist Bolsheviks seized power (October Revolution), forming a soviet republic (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) and making peace with Germany (Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) the next year. Threatened by these events, the Allies landed troops along the Russian coastline (Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War) and supported the rival "White" factions in an attempt to overthrow the new Soviet regime (Russian Civil War).
